Roof Pitch Explained: Ratios, Degrees, and What's Actually Walkable
What roof pitch means, how to measure it from the ground or the attic, how it converts to degrees, and why it changes both your material order and your labour cost.
Roof pitch is written as a ratio — 6/12, 8/12, 4/12 — and it means inches of vertical rise for every 12 inches of horizontal run. A 6/12 roof climbs 6 inches per foot travelled sideways.
That ratio decides three separate things: how much roof surface sits above your footprint, which coverings you are allowed to use, and whether anyone can walk on it. Get it wrong and you under-order shingles and under-budget labour at the same time.

How to measure roof pitch
From the roof or attic (most accurate). Hold a level horizontally against the rafter or roof surface. Measure 12 inches along the level from where it touches, then measure straight down from that mark to the surface. That vertical distance in inches is your rise per 12 — a 6-inch drop is a 6/12 pitch.
From the ground. Stand back, photograph the gable end square-on, and measure the rise and run on the photo. Any consistent units work, since you only need the ratio. This is less precise but adequate for ordering.
With a phone. Inclinometer apps read the angle in degrees when laid against a rafter. Convert with rise = tan(angle) × 12.

The conversion is angle = arctan(rise ÷ 12). Note that a 12/12 pitch is 45 degrees, not 12 — pitch and degrees are different scales entirely, and confusing them is the most common misunderstanding in this topic.
The pitch factor is where money is lost
A sloped roof has more surface than the footprint beneath it. The pitch factor is the multiplier:
Pitch factor = √(1 + (rise ÷ 12)²)
At 6/12 that is 1.118, so a 1,500 square foot footprint carries about 1,677 square feet of roof — nearly 12% more. Order shingles off the footprint alone and you are a square and a half short, which means a second trip and possibly a different production lot.
Worked example — a 40 × 30 ft house at 6/12:
- Footprint: 40 × 30 = 1,200 ft²
- Pitch factor: √(1 + 0.25) = 1.118
- Roof area: 1,200 × 1.118 = 1,342 ft²
- Add 10% waste: 1,476 ft²
- Squares: 1,476 ÷ 100 = 14.8, so order 15

What pitch allows
Code sets minimums by covering type. Under IRC R905:
- Below 2/12 — asphalt shingles are not permitted at all. You need a membrane system: TPO, EPDM, or modified bitumen.
- 2/12 to 4/12 — shingles permitted with a doubled underlayment.
- 4/12 and above — standard single-layer underlayment.
Metal panels and standing seam go lower than shingles, some down to 1/4:12 for structural standing seam. Always check the specific product's approval rather than assuming a category minimum.
What pitch costs
Pitch drives labour twice over.
Up to about 7/12, most roofers work unaided and quote standard rates. From 8/12 to 9/12 roof jacks or a harness become normal, slowing the work. Above 9/12 you are into staging, and many contractors add a steep-slope surcharge of 20% or more.
Combined with the extra surface area, a 12/12 roof over the same footprint as a 4/12 can cost 60% more to cover — about 34% more material, plus the labour premium.
Low pitch and ice dams
Lower pitches shed water more slowly, which matters in cold climates. Snow sits longer, meltwater moves slower, and ice dams have more opportunity to form at the eaves.
Ice-and-water shield along eaves is required by most cold-climate codes and is the single most valuable component on the roof there. On a low-pitch roof in a snowy region, extend it further up the slope than the minimum — the code figure is a floor, not an optimum.
Common mistakes
- Ordering off the footprint. The single most expensive pitch error.
- Confusing pitch with degrees. A "45-degree roof" is 12/12. There is no such thing as a 45/12 pitch.
- Assuming one pitch across the whole roof. Dormers, porches, and additions frequently differ. Measure each plane.
- Ignoring pitch when quoting labour. A contractor who quotes a steep roof at walkable rates will find the difference somewhere, usually in a change order.
