How much concrete do I need?

Multiply length by width by thickness — all in feet — then divide by 27 to get cubic yards, which is the unit ready-mix is sold in. The step that catches most people is thickness: a 4-inch slab is 0.333 feet, not 4, and treating inches as feet overstates an order twelvefold. Once you have the raw volume, add 5 to 10 percent. ACI 301 recommends the overage because a sub-grade is never perfectly flat, forms bow slightly under the weight of wet concrete, and some material is always left in the chute and the wheelbarrow. Running short mid-pour is far worse than having a little left over: a cold joint forms where fresh concrete meets concrete that has begun to set, and that joint is a permanent weakness. Below about half a cubic yard, bagged concrete is usually more practical. Above it, ready-mix is cheaper per yard and dramatically less work — a single cubic yard is forty-five 80-pound bags to mix by hand.

Worked example

A 10 × 10 ft patio slab at 4 inches thick

  1. 1Convert the thickness: 4 in ÷ 12 = 0.333 ft
  2. 2Volume: 10 × 10 × 0.333 = 33.3 ft³
  3. 3Cubic yards: 33.3 ÷ 27 = 1.23 yd³
  4. 4Add 10% waste: 1.23 × 1.10 = 1.36 yd³
