How deep should mulch be?

2–4 inches for established beds. Too deep can starve roots; too shallow lets weeds through.

How many bags of mulch on a pallet?

Between 60 and 70 two-cubic-foot bags, or roughly 120–150 cubic feet — about 4.5 to 5.5 cubic yards. Past about 10 bags, bulk delivery is usually cheaper even after the delivery fee.

Should mulch touch the trunk of a tree?

No. Piling mulch against the trunk — a "mulch volcano" — traps moisture against the bark, invites rot and rodents, and can girdle the tree. Pull mulch back 3 to 6 inches from the trunk flare and keep the layer even out to the drip line.

Mid to late spring once the soil has warmed, and again in autumn in cold regions to insulate roots. Mulching too early in spring keeps the soil cold and slows everything you have just planted.

Does mulch attract termites?

Mulch does not attract termites in itself, but any wood in constant contact with a foundation gives them a bridge. Keep mulch 6 inches back from the wall and below the siding line, and inspect that gap annually.

What is the difference between mulch and compost?

Mulch sits on the surface to suppress weeds and hold moisture. Compost is worked into the soil to feed it. Coarse bark mulch used as a soil amendment ties up nitrogen as it breaks down, which is why the two are not interchangeable.

How long does mulch last?

Organic mulches break down over one to three years depending on particle size and climate — shredded hardwood faster, large bark nuggets slower. Rather than adding a fresh full layer each year, top up to your target depth or the total gets too deep.

How much mulch do I need?

Measure the bed area in square feet, multiply by the depth in feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. Two to four inches is the right depth for established beds: thinner lets light through and weeds germinate, thicker starves roots of oxygen and holds water against stems. If you are topping up rather than starting fresh, measure what is already there and add only the difference — layering a full 3 inches onto existing mulch every spring is how beds end up eight inches deep and waterlogged. Bagged mulch comes in 2 cubic foot bags, so a cubic yard is 13.5 bags. Past about ten bags, bulk delivery is usually cheaper even after the delivery fee, and it saves a great deal of plastic. Keep mulch pulled back 3 to 6 inches from tree trunks and shrub stems. Piling it against bark traps moisture, invites rot and rodents, and can eventually girdle a tree — the "mulch volcano" is the most common and most damaging mulching error.

Worked example

Two beds totalling 300 ft² at 3 inches deep

2Volume: 300 × 0.25 = 75 ft³
3Cubic yards: 75 ÷ 27 = 2.78 yd³
4In 2 ft³ bags: 75 ÷ 2 = 38 bags
