What size is a piece of sod?

Most slabs are 16 × 24 inches, which is 2.67 square feet. Some growers supply rolls of 2 × 5 feet or large rolls for commercial installation.

How much does a pallet of sod weigh?

Between 1,500 and 3,000 lb, depending on soil thickness and how wet it is. This matters for delivery access and for how you plan to move it — a pallet is not a wheelbarrow job.

How do I prepare soil for sod?

Remove existing grass and weeds, loosen the top 4–6 inches, grade to fall away from the house, add topsoil to a depth of 4 inches if the existing soil is poor, then rake smooth and lightly firm. Sod laid on compacted ground roots badly no matter how well you water it.

How soon should sod be laid after delivery?

Within 24 hours, and the same day in hot weather. Stacked sod heats up on the pallet and begins to break down — a pallet left two days in summer can be dead in the middle.

How much water does new sod need?

Keep it consistently moist for the first two weeks, which usually means watering daily or more in heat. Then taper to deeper, less frequent watering to drive roots down. The most common failure is watering lightly and often past the establishment period.

When can I mow new sod?

After about two weeks, once it resists a gentle tug — that means roots have knitted into the soil. Mow high on the first cut and make sure the mower blade is sharp; a dull blade tears sod that is not yet firmly anchored.

How much sod do I need?

Measure the lawn in square feet and add about five percent for the cuts around beds, trees, and curved edges — ten percent if the shape is genuinely irregular. Sod is sold three ways and you may be quoted in any of them: by the square foot, by the square yard (divide by nine), or by the pallet, which is typically 400 to 500 square feet depending on the grower. Confirm the pallet size before ordering, because across four pallets the difference between 400 and 500 is an entire pallet. Break an irregular lawn into rectangles and measure each rather than averaging a single length and width; averaging is how people end up a pallet short on delivery day. Timing matters as much as quantity. Sod is a living product that begins breaking down on the pallet, so it should be laid within 24 hours of delivery and the same day in hot weather. Prepare the soil first — grade, loosen, and add topsoil if needed — because you cannot fix the ground once the sod is on it.

A 50 × 30 ft back lawn
